Tartan Pricing System

Monday, April 12th, 2010

This morning we’ve introduced a new system in the way we price products with custom tartans which will make it clearer and easier for our customers to use.

Due to the large number of cloths we offer, the price of our kilts is comprised of 2 factors: the cost of making the kilt and the cloth used to make it. As with all our prices, we aim to be as transparent as possible when calculating retail prices.

Our old system showed the price of products excluding the cost of the cloth. So, an 8 yard kilt would show as £188, and the cloth would add £100-£300 on top of that price. We felt that this was somewhat misleading to our customers who initially thought they might be able to purchase a kilt for £188, and not many people want a kilt made with no cloth! (although we’re happy if you want to supply the cloth yourself).

Today, we’ve introduced a change which makes this a bit clearer.

We now show the price of an 8 yard kilt as the total of the cost to make the kilt and the cost of the cheapest cloth available for that kilt. We display this as ‘From £288′ (using the £188 cost of making the kilt and presuming the cheapest cloth adds £100). We feel this gives you a more accurate starting price when viewing our range of kilts on offer, and a good estimate of what it will cost to have a kilt made for you.

Don’t worry, we’ve not limited our range of cloths available in any way, and you can still have a kilt made in any cloth. Now, when you view our range of tartans, you will see how much it will cost to have your product in that tartan, rather than the price per metre of the cloth. So when viewing the tartans for a 5 yard kilt, you’ll see the range of cloths available with how much each cloth adds to the product (eg +£10, +£50). That way you’ll be able to compare the cost of the kilt in each of the tartans, from each of the mills, a lot more clearly.

Finally, when you save a kilt in your shopping cart and log out, when you log back in again, the tartan you’ve chosen will be remembered.

We hope you’ll find this updated pricing structure useful when purchasing a new kilt outfit, or custom made kilt.

You can see all of this in action on our kilts page.

Kilt Outfits Price Reduction

Monday, January 25th, 2010

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve just reviewed and reduced the prices of many of our hugely popular prince charlie kilt outfits and argyll kilt outfits.

Many of the kilt outfits have come down in price, some by over £50!

However, we have got 1 price increase, and it’s something we’re quite pleased about. Our Contemporary Prince Charlie Black Shadow Outfit has gone up slightly, however, the outfit has been improved considerably. It now features significantly better quality accessories, including full leather brogues, custom made belt and buckle, contemporary functional sgian dubh and funky thistle kilt pin.

We hope you’ll like the new changes and as always, please let us know if you have any comments or suggestions.

You can also find these new sporrans, which are exclusive to Macdonald Sporrans, available individually in our store via the links above.

Basic Style Kilt Packages

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

We’re in the process of updating our hugely successful line of kilt outfit packages to make them even better.

We’ve changed our casual outfits to be our new Basic Casual Outfits as this name greater reflects the quality of the items included. These outfits include all the basic pieces to form a great casual kilt outfit, with an emphasis on great value for money throughout. Yet again, we’ve not used any cheap products, or any budget compromises, we’ve just used great quality items at competitive prices to build a truly great outfit.

Don’t be scared off by the low price – this is a great kilt outfit.

We’ve reduced the price of the benchmark 11 piece basic casual kilt outfit to only £159.99. How did we manage this? Primarily by reducing the number of options available. We found that most people wanted a white shirt, most people wanted the L03 sporran, most people wanted white hose. By setting these choices as standard options, we can buy those items in bulk and reduce our costs.

We also noticed that our 5 piece and 7 piece outfits were significantly more popular than the 4 piece and 6 piece. So, we’ve removed them to simplify the lineup, and added a basic kilt pin at no extra cost, brining the 5 piece up to a 6 piece basic casual kilt oufit, and the 7 piece up to an 8 piece basic casual kilt outfit.

What do you think? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this new range, so feel free to let us know what you think about them by leaving a comment below, using the Macdonald Sporrans Contact form, or calling us on 0131 669 1487.

Wedding Season

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

As we get well and truly into the wedding season this summer, many people get out their tuxs and kilts from the cupboard. We have all the bits and bobs that you might need to add the finishing touch to an existing kilt outfit, and offer simply amazing deals on new outfits.

Our Traditional Prince Charlie Kilt Outfit is the perfect attire for a wedding or another formal event. It’s a black tie outfit that really looks the part, without costing an arm and a leg! Kilt rental for a wedding weekend (if you can find one available) will cost £60-£90 – you can buy your very own outfit at only 3-4 times that price! That means if you’ll wear it 4 or more times in your life, then you’ll have saved money…and trust me…once you realise how people start treating a man in a kilt…you’ll have it on every other weekend!

If you’re just not the traditional kind of guy, we also have a Contemporary Prince Charlie Kilt Outfit, with a more modern touch to the classic design.

We would also like to wish all the brides and grooms the very best throughout this wedding season…and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for less rain and more sunshine come Saturday!
