PostComm Dinner Reflections

As previously mentioned, I was honoured to be invited to a dinner being held by the CEO and other representatives of PostComm, the Postal Services Regulator in the UK.

The dinner was being held due to the much publicised problems with Royal Mail at the moment. In my understanding, Royal Mail is facing significant financial problems at the moment, caused by a number of factors including lack of modernisation and declining letter volumes. It is also charged with operating a universal service at a ‘below-cost’ rate, where you can send a letter to any part of the UK for a standard flat rate, irrespective of the distance – something we would not have under a purely free-market postal industry.

Attending the dinner were representatives of people involved in the postal industry, representatives of customers (both personal and business) and actual business customers such as ourselves.

I’m pleased to say that while the job facing Royal Mail is significant and challenging, my experience of the people who are at the forefront of keeping it afloat are of a high pedigree doing the very best they can. I sincerely hope that Royal Mail can resolve the issues it is facing and resume normal service as soon as possible.
