About Us

Macdonald Sporrans is an online Scottish Highland dress and Celtic gifts retailer, and has been trading through its family of websites and eBay since June 2004. Currently it operates buyakilt.com, buyahipflask.com and buyatankard.com.

Macdonald Sporrans is owned and operated by Fergus Macdonald.

Roots

Fergus started the business as a student at The University of Edinburgh, while studying for his degree in Business Studies. He has since graduated with an MA with First Class Honours.

The idea for the business began when he noticed that there was a considerable demand for highland dress accessories on eBay, and only second hand items on offer. He established an account with a local wholesaler and began trading in sporrans on eBay in 2004, making him one of the first Scottish highland dress retailers to do so. And so…Macdonald Sporrans was born.

Strategy

Fergus took the theory he was studying in university and applied it to practical contexts in the company. He realised very quickly that by working closely with manufacturers Macdonald Sporrans was able to buy highland dress accessories at competitive prices, and by operating solely through the internet, they were able to keep their costs to a minimum.

Over the following few years, and particularly since graduating, Fergus developed relationships with a number of manufacturers and wholesalers with the aim of getting products to customers in the most direct way possible. We arrange for many of our products to be sent directly from the manufacturers to the customer, eliminating unnecessary steps in the supply chain, and ultimately providing great products at great prices.

Values

We like happy customers! And we believe that by providing good value products at competitive prices and by offering honest and reliable customer service, our customers will be happy.

Value For Money

All products have a value, and value is how well a product or service can fulfil its intended purpose when its associated costs and benefits are taken into account.

Don’t be put off by our low prices, we do not sell anything that does not pass our stringent quality standards (if we wouldn’t wear it – we don’t see why you would!). If it’s not expensive, it doesn’t mean it’s poor quality! You can always find something cheaper, but you can’t always find something that’s better value for money.
